The Art of Editing

Editing takes on numerous forms, ranging from structural editing to proofreading, all of which play a vital role in the development of a well-crafted manuscript. Although little is known or recognized of editing outside the publishing and writing world, all readers benefit from the silent services of editors. A well-written novel hasn’t escaped the scrutinizing first, second, and third pass of an editor’s eye. Editing provides a polish to a manuscript that helps ensure that the writing is clear, correct, and accurate. Most importantly, editing focuses not on changing your writing, but enhancing it.

“To write is human, to edit is divine.”
― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

My Services

Currently, I provide line editing and copyediting services. Line editing focuses on sentence-level edits, with changes ranging from tone, sentence structure, and language. Copyediting focuses on the rules of writing, with changes ranging from grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I find that line editing and copyediting typically go hand-in-hand, so I do not charge separately for these services unless a heavy hand is needed.

I do not offer proofreading services for manuscripts that I have edited; it is highly recommend that this be done by a third-party. I will proofread manuscripts at a discounted rate.

I do not offer developmental editing (also known as structural editing) at this time but hope to in the near future.

At this time, I welcome all new clients whose work is fiction or non-fiction (in a limited-capacity).

Rates

  • For presses, I am willing and happy to work at their standard editing rates.
  • Please contact me directly for part-time or temporary work, and starting hourly rate.
  • For individual clients, my rate starts at $0.034 per word. For example, if you had a 10,000-word manuscript, the starting cost would be $340.
  • Any rush orders will be subject to an additional fee that will be determined after the initial consultation.
  • I offer free editing services to disadvantaged teens.
  • For turn around times, please reach out to determine an exact timeline.
